brief explanation of the symposium:
The multiple dimensions of the crisis experienced by Latin American societies in recent decades, with consequences more impressive-traumatic changes of the production system, increasing poverty, homelessness and social polarization, increasing precariousness of working conditions and material life, reducing the volume and quality of public services, dismantling the welfare state and reformulation of the configuration state, have drawn the concern of researchers in social sciences and humanities for the investigation of these topics and related social realities immemorial.
This context, this symposium aims to bring together original research papers that address the complex and uneven process of construction of the welfare state and social policies in Latin America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from the analysis of the continuities, changes and transformations the social question, as well as the responses articulated by the state and civil society against it. It aims to bring together social science research and human eyes with different disciplinary and thematic approaches, chronological and spatial cuts, methodologies and scales of observation, to focus their attention in everyday spaces of social vulnerability, exclusion and social care model before the constitution itself that the welfare state to its concretion.
For these reasons, the symposium aims to advance understanding of the interaction between the ruling elites, their ideas and institutions on the one hand, and the common people and their everyday experiences around social issues and social policy making and the welfare state in Latin America in two centuries of republican life, on the other side. Seeks to recover the role of various actors (individuals, groups, associations, state, church, etc..) Including the popular sectors, the excluded, the assisted builders as their particular places-from-society of his time.
